The LGBTI Community in Barbados celebrated some of the milestones they have been able to achieve with a panel discussion on International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). The Being LGBTI in the Caribbean (BLIC) Project, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, collaborated with Equals Barbados in hosting a thought-provoking panel discussion at the UN House in Barbados on Wednesday night. The event aimed to shed light on the challenges faced and progress made by the LGBTI community in Barbados, emphasizing the paramount importance of inclusivity, diversity, and open dialogue to promote human rights for all.

The panel discussion brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including civil society organizations, activists, community members, and international partners. The panellists examined the current landscape and identified opportunities for further advancement towards equality and respect for the rights of the LGBTI community.

Speaking to the importance of dialogues such as this, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Ugo Blanco, spoke on the role of collaboration in promoting inclusion and ensuring no-one is left behind, "we stand united to celebrate diversity and to address the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTI community in Barbados. It is crucial that we foster an environment of inclusivity and acceptance, where every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can thrive and enjoy equal rights and opportunities."

The esteemed panellists engaged in a vibrant discussion, highlighting the progress made by Barbados in recognizing the rights of the LGBTI community. They acknowledged the ground-breaking steps taken by the government, such as the decriminalization of same-sex intimacy, and underscored the need to build upon this progress. The panel also delved into the challenges faced by LGBTI individuals, including discrimination, social stigma, and limited access to healthcare and legal protection.

Rene Holder McClean Ramirez of Equals Barbados, a community organisation dedicated to providing safe spaces for members of the LGBTI Community, highlighted the importance of continued conversation and discussion on issues facing the community. Ramirez also recognised the lessons learnt and mentorship provided by the elder LGBTI community. 

The panel discussion concluded with a commitment to continued collaboration and a shared vision of a more inclusive and accepting society in Barbados. The participants acknowledged that sustained efforts from all sectors of society are required to drive lasting change and protect the rights of LGBTI individuals. UNDP Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, in partnership with governments and stakeholders, remains dedicated to the advancement of inclusive and sustainable development throughout the region.
