"After the outbreak of the Boko Haram security crisis, life became a persistent struggle. I could barely feed my children. Like me, members of our farming group of 15 women, bound by shared struggles, faced a lot of difficulties: no farming land, no working tools; all we had were our dreams, fading before us.” Say Ms. Dringate Kolokon, a local farmer in the community of Mozogo, Far-North, Cameroon, in a seemingly heavy and trembling voice.

Ms. Dringate, 50 years old, lives with her husband and 10 children, 8 girls and 2 boys, in Mozogo, in the Far-North region of Cameroon, one of the communities severely affected by the Boko Haram crisis in the Lake Chad Basin. Like many other women in Mozogo, the devastating effects of the crisis in 2013 forced Dringate to abandon farming, a predominant source of livelihood in her community. This made life difficult for her family, especially as her husband was also a farmer. To combat adversity and find a new source of livelihood, Dringate and some of her peers set up a farming group called ‘Maya Ngozi’ (the women's idea) to work for mutual benefits. However, they were faced with challenges that made success far-fetched. They lacked not only the technical skills but also the materials needed for the initiative to excel.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), through the Regional Stabilization Facility—Cameroon Window (RSF) in the Far North Region, identified and supported Dringate’s group and other agricultural initiatives in the region to grow. The project assisted the farming groups to organize themselves into Common Initiative Groups (CIGs), strengthened their agricultural and entrepreneurial skills, and provided them with agricultural inputs and seeds (onions, sorghum, okra, and maize) as well as work equipment (heavy-duty motor pumps, hoes, wheelbarrows, sprayers, rakes, load carriers, and motor tricycles). The project also constructed warehouses near community markets to facilitate the storage of agricultural produce. "Before, transporting our little harvest to the market was exhausting; having where to store the harvest was a bigger problem. Now with the tricycles and a warehouse, life is much easier!" says Ms. Aisha, a member of Maya Ngozi CIG.

The Maya Ngozi GIC has considerably improved and intensified its agricultural activities. The members now work efficiently in both the dry and rainy seasons, with a significant increase in their annual agricultural production, from four to eight tons for onions and from zero to seven tons for sorghum. Figures they could never have imagined. The impact of the RSF intervention has helped them to extend far beyond the fields. The increase in income has enabled the GIC, like several others, to improve the well-being of their families, a dream they once thought impossible. “This intervention was timely. It came to us like a sudden light in the heart of darkness. The skills and material received have enabled us not only to bounce back but to considerably expand our activities and turnover.” Expresses Ms. Dringate with a big smile.

As a result of the CIG’s persistent growth and ambition to become a benchmark in their field, the women have formed a collective savings initiative, which is helping them manage their proceeds while fostering a sense of financial security and solidarity. "Our daughters now have the chance to become doctors or teachers. We are no longer just surviving; we are building a future together." Dringate adds with pride.

To further enhance agricultural performance, RSF has provided a farming tractor to serve the community. "At the moment, our wheat farmlands cover 231 hectares, which is usually tedious to till manually. Thanks to the tractors, tilling has become easier, inspiring farmers to increase their farms.” Nketchou Salomon, Delegate, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mayo Moskota, Far-North Region.

The experience of the Maya Ngozi CIG is just one of 190 agricultural GICs (over 1,596 people) that have benefited from the project in the communities of Makary, Fotokol, Kolofata, and Hile Alifa in 2023. These results of the stabilization efforts have strengthened the resilience of the population of the Far-North Region and yielded substantial human development and transformative impact. This was achieved thanks to the significant support of the Governments of Cameroon, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the European Union.

Through the RSF, UNDP continues to transform lives for the better, even if much remains to be done. “We are proud of the impact we are making on the lives of women and their families, thanks to the support of our valuable partners. However, many other women and communities are still struggling. With continued support, UNDP will empower more women and youths, equipping them with the tools and knowledge they need and providing them with life-changing opportunities to live their dreams and achieve sustainable development.” Aissata De, Resident Representative a.i.
