The second annual partnership report, issued in 2007 and entitled ”Improving Lives: Results from the partnership of the United Nations and the European Commission in 2006”, explores the results of the EC-UN partnership in 2006, with a focus on humanitarian and development assistance, conflict prevention and post-conflict recovery. The UN-EC partnership that year spanned all regions in the world and included policy dialogue and cooperation at global level as well as around issues internal to the European Union, such as asylum, health, and decent work.
The EU and UN working together in 2006 achieved some of the following results:
1. Protected people: Internally displaced and stateless people and 33 million refugees were assisted, and protection to 19 million people was provided.
2. Delivered food aid: 43 million people were supported with food aid, including 25.5 million children and 9 million women. In Sudan, food was supplied to 6 million people nationwide, including monthly rations to three million people in Darfur. 7900 Households received crop seeds and farming tools.
3. Provided services to refugees: 8.8 million medical consultations were carried out to refugee patients in Jordan, Lebanon, the Syrian Arab Republic, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Primary education for 85,860 Burundian refugee children was assured in Tanzania.
4. Helped refugees return home: 75,000 people in Tanzanian refugee camps were enabled to repatriate voluntarily in safety and with dignity, and special assistance was provided to unaccompanied minors prior to and during repatriation.
5. Prevented disease: 75 million children were immunized and 2.1 billion doses of oral polio vaccine administered around the world.
6. Curbed animal-related disease outbreaks: The Turkish authorities were assisted to conduct vaccinations, track animal-immunity levels and monitor for avian flu in the country's strategic Thrace region, Asia's gateway to Europe.
7. Deepened democracy: 45 million people were enabled to vote in democratic elections in Benin, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guyana, Madagascar, Mauritania, Indonesia, Occupied Palestinian Territories and Zambia.
8. Strengthened parliaments: Parliaments of 8 countries were supported to exercise their role in overseeing government and representing the voice of the people.
Highlights
- In 2006, the EC approved more than € 1.3 billion for the implementation of UN programs in 105 countries.
- Top countries receiving financial aid from the EC to UN activities in 2006 were: Iraq, Afghanistan, Occupied Palestinian, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Pakistan, Russia, DRC and Nigeria.
- Together, the EC and the UN addressed crises and humanitarian emergencies, cooperated in difficult conflict and post-conflict situations, and helped many developing countries to tackle their development challenges.
