One month after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Haiti, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) distributes 22 tons of personal protective equipment (PPE), power and other key equipment to humanitarian organizations in the South and Grand’Anse Departments, the two most affected regions by the earthquake.
UNDP partnered with the Directorate for Civil Protection of Haïti (DGPC) to help 22.742 households located in cities such as Les Cayes, Jérémie, Corail, Anse-à-Veau, l’Asile and Miragoâne.
Through this collaboration, UNDP provides the Haitian Directorate of Civil Protection (Direction de la Protection Civile, DPC) the emergency kits and work tools to improve their response to natural disasters. The DPC distribute the donated equipment to its National Center of Urgent Operations (COUN) and, subsequently, to the Departmental Centers of Urgent Operations (COUD) to ensure effective and rapid operations in the field.
With this donation, humanitarian relief actions that remained unfeasible for technical reasons until now, will be rendered possible, especially in remote rural areas with restrained access. This also means that the DPC teams will now increase the total number of vulnerable people they provide relief to.
