Stronger Parliamentary Institutions in Georgia

Overview

The European Union and UNDP assist the Parliament of Georgia in implementing institutional reforms, promoting transparency in legislation, representing citizen interests effectively, streamlining law-making processes, and strengthening governmental oversight.

The project's current phase has expanded to include support for the Supreme Council of the Ajara Autonomous Republic, aiming to replicate the successful development approach applied to the Parliament of Georgia. Drawing on past collaboration experiences, tailored assistance will be provided to optimize resources for the Supreme Council.

Upholding UNDP's commitment to inclusivity, the project prioritizes women's full participation and active involvement at every stage, ensuring no one is left behind.

What We Do

In close partnership with the Parliament of Georgia and the Supreme Council of the Ajara Autonomous Republic, the initiative is shaped around major areas:

1. Law-making and oversight: Enhancing the Parliament's capabilities to conduct its constitutional responsibilities in law-making and oversight effectively and strengthening its oversight functions to ensure accountability and transparency in governmental actions and policies.

2. Institutional efficiency: Streamlining and optimizing the operational efficiency of the Parliament. By introducing modern management practices, improving procedural frameworks, and leveraging technology, the project intends to make the parliamentary processes more effective and responsive to the needs of the citizens and the state.

3. CSOs and citizens: Fostering a closer collaboration between the Parliament, CSOs, and the public to engage citizens in the legislative process, enhancing transparency, accountability, and public trust in parliamentary activities.

4. Political processes: Facilitating dialogue among political parties, enhancing the capacities of parliamentary committees, and promoting inclusive and participatory policymaking. This direction also aims to ensure sustainable institutional development and strengthen national ownership over the reform processes.

Expected Results

  • Strengthened law-making and oversight capacities.
  • Streamlined political processes and improved representation.
  • Greater accountability, CSO cooperation, and citizen engagement.
  • Enhanced institutional efficiency.
