Jakarta, October 31, 2024 For seven years, the Youth Co:Lab project—a collaboration between UNDP and the Citi Foundation—has empowered thousands of youth-led businesses in Indonesia. Since 2018, Youth Co:Lab Indonesia has supported more than 600 youth-led businesses, over half of which are led by women.

This year marks a significant milestone for Youth Co:Lab with the official handover of the Youth Co:Lab Module on Youth Social Entrepreneurship, covering Digital Marketing, Strategic Finance, and Impact Measurement & Management, to Indonesia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports. This module will be integrated into national programs, including the Entrepreneurship Lecturer Facilitator Training Program (ToF), to strengthen the youth entrepreneurship ecosystem nationwide.

Sujala Pant, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Indonesia, stated, “These modules, developed and refined over seven years, are designed to equip young Indonesians with the skills and tools they need to become successful entrepreneurs and changemakers. By transferring these resources to the Government of Indonesia, we hope it will transcend impact through entrepreneurship training, especially in remote and underserved areas, ensuring no one is left behind.”

Despite significant progress, challenges remain in areas such as inclusive policies, access to funding, and infrastructure. Therefore, Youth Co:Lab is once again hosting the 2024 National Dialogue themed "Amplification for an Advanced Youth Entrepreneurship Ecosystem," bringing together participants from government agencies, NGOs, youth organizations, and business incubators.

In his keynote speech, Dr. Raden Isnanta, M.Pd., Deputy on Youth Empowerment at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, outlined the Indonesian government's commitment to empowering youth through inclusive innovation, "The Ministry of Youth and Sport has supported Youth Co:Lab Indonesia since the onset, to empower the youth government's roadmap on youth entrepreneurship which also emphasizes collaboration between policymakers, private sectors, and civil society. Through the handover of the Youth Co Modules into our national programme, we hope that youth across Indonesia, especially in remote areas, have access to the knowledge and support they need to succeed in entrepreneurship," said Isnanta.

In his opening remark, Batara Sianturi, Chief Executive Officer, Citi Indonesia, emphasized the importance of youth entrepreneurship in shaping the nation’s future. “Citi Foundation is proud to be part of the program that empowers the next generation of leaders and innovators. With Indonesia’s demographic bonus lasting until 2041, it is important for young people to collaborate and take a leading role in driving innovation, digitalization, and sustainable initiatives toward realizing Indonesia’s Vision 2045,” he said.

"Over the last 14 years, the British Council has empowered Indonesian youth through initiatives in social enterprise, skills development in sports, digital literacy, climate awareness, and funding for innovative projects," said Summer Xia, Country Director of the British Council in Indonesia. "Our ongoing commitment includes forthcoming research that focuses on skill gaps among disabled young people in West Java and Bali, identifying challenges they face in accessing employment and entrepreneurial opportunities and exploring ways in which inclusive training, educational institutions, and cross-sector partnerships can help bridge the gaps."

The dialogue concluded with a commitment to continued collaboration, including the development of actionable policy recommendations to address key challenges such as skills development, access to finance, and inclusivity. These recommendations will be presented to government and private sector stakeholders by November to inform future programs and policies supporting youth entrepreneurship.
