Palu, August 9, 2023 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), The Ministry of National Development (Bappenas), and the Ministry of Finance, will be engaged in joint monitoring from August 8th to 10th, 2023. This initiative aims to assess the progress of the PETRA project across Central Sulawesi and West Nusa Tenggara provinces. The monitoring will gauge the impact and utilization of reconstructed facilities, including Anutapura Hospital-Palu, a health center in East Lombok, schools in North Lombok, as well as ongoing reconstruction projects such as SDN Pengawu in Palu and schools in Parigi Moutong. The outcomes of this monitoring endeavor will be presented and discussed during the PETRA project board meeting scheduled for August 11, 2023, in Palu.

Since its inception in 2019, the PETRA project has remained steadfast in its mission to reconstruct 54 public service and community infrastructures spanning NTB and Central Sulawesi provinces. As of August 2023, the project has achieved the successful reconstruction of 35 out of the 54 targeted facilities, signifying a significant advancement in the region's recovery journey. These reconstructed facilities have already had a positive impact, benefiting over 2000 students and providing improved health services to 450,000 individuals. Moreover, more than 3000 families residing in the designated areas, including 535 MSME groups and local vendors at community markets, have directly experienced the positive outcomes of these efforts.

Noteworthy achievements in Central Sulawesi include the completion of reconstruction at three health facilities – Anutapura Hospital in Palu City, Torabelo Hospital in Sigi District, and Puskemas Malei in Donggala District. Additionally, reconstruction efforts encompassed three school facilities – SMPN 1 Labuhan, SMPN SATAP 3 Sindue Tobata, and SMPN 3 Sirenja in Donggala. Furthermore, the project addressed crucial needs by rebuilding two landfill facilities at TPA Kawatuna in Palu and TPA Kabonga in Donggala, along with five community infrastructures. These included two local markets in Omu Village in Sigi and Sibado Village in Donggala, a suspension bridge in Tuva Village in Sigi, and two irrigation canals in Tuva and Jono Villages in Sigi. The UNDP PETRA project is now continuing its reconstruction efforts on the remaining 19 subprojects, encompassing 18 schools and 1 health center, in Palu, Sigi, and Parigi Moutong District in Central Sulawesi.

Christian Usfinit, RRU Team Leader, emphasized, "This underscores UNDP's unwavering commitment to delivering on its promise of completing the outstanding reconstruction targets." The anticipated completion date for all reconstruction activities remains set for the first half of 2024, aligning with the PETRA project's established timeline.

Both the Central Sulawesi and West Nusa Tenggara reconstruction projects form an integral part of UNDP's Programme for Earthquake and Tsunami Infrastructure Reconstruction Assistance (PETRA) project, generously funded by Germany’s development bank, KfW. The project, actively engaged in the region since 2019, is entrusted with facilitating the transition from immediate response to a comprehensive long-term recovery plan.
