Bishkek, 17 Ocotber 2024 - An expanded meeting of the interdepartmental working group on climate change was held in Bishkek. The event, organized under the UNDP-ZKFA project "Advancing the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Process for Medium- and Long-Term Planning and Implementation of Climate Change Adaptation Measures in the Kyrgyz Republic," served as a platform for discussing the project's key outcomes and consolidating sectoral and regional adaptation plans into a unified NAP.

The NAP is a strategic document aimed at increasing climate resilience and reducing climate vulnerability risks for society and ecosystems. Its adoption will ensure the systematic integration of adaptation measures in key vulnerable sectors and attract international financing, helping to protect public health, natural resources, urban development, and improve food and energy security.

Participants discussed the project's main results, including climate data and statistics, climate finance, and the development of regulatory frameworks for climate change adaptation. Additionally, they reviewed the findings of climate risk and vulnerability assessments across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, biodiversity, disaster risk management, urban development, and energy. The presented data provided insights into the impacts of climate change and offered recommendations for the next steps in consolidating the NAP.

Key outcomes of the NAP project:

  1. Strengthening institutional mechanisms for adaptation planning and NAP development.

  2. Integrating adaptation measures into priority sectors, including healthcare, biodiversity, agriculture, and disaster risk management.

  3. Enhancing regional adaptation capacity, with plans for Osh, Batken, and Jalal-Abad provinces.

The meeting brought together representatives from government bodies, the scientific community, and experts who discussed the next steps towards the development and approval of the unified NAP by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic.
