Promoting judicial transparency and environmental justice

October 4, 2024, Sary-Oy - These days a conference of judges on strengthening the judiciary, the rule of law, and promoting environmental justice policies is taking place, organized by the Association of Judges of the Kyrgyz Republic with support from UNDP and USAID.
The conference is attended by more than 125 representatives of the judiciary, government agencies, international organizations and the Judges' Associations of Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
The conference includes discussions on the implementation of public policies to improve the justice system, as well as environmental rights and access to justice in environmental matters.
Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic Nurlan Musaev in his speech noted that the State Target Program “Development of the justice system for 2023-2026” approved by the Decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic is designed to make appropriate changes in the legislative, managerial, educational spheres aimed at achieving a fair and effectively working justice system. “The Supreme Court together with the Council of Judges of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Association of Judges of the Kyrgyz Republic are making significant efforts to implement the measures laid down in the State Target Program”, said Nurlan Musaev, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court.
In addition, the Supreme Court, being one of the parties to the Memorandum on the Establishment of the Dialogue National Platform/Site to Discuss Environmental Rights and Access to Justice signed by the Supreme Court, the General Prosecutor's Office, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision, the Ministry of Justice, the Bar of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Aarhus Center Institution in Bishkek, contributes to the promotion of environmental justice in the country,
UNDP Resident Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic Alexandra Solovieva noted that UNDP will continue to support the Kyrgyz Republic in establishing a transparent, fair and effective judicial system for sustainable and inclusive development. In addition, she emphasized that: “The UN Development Program is helping Kyrgyzstan to strengthen environmental justice by establishing a legal framework based on human rights standards, strengthening institutions that ensure fairness and enforcement of environmental laws, and ensuring access to justice and empowering citizens to actively protect their environmental rights and influence environmental policy.”
