The Importance of Mentorship in Modern Business

Mentorship is a crucial element in fostering entrepreneurship, particularly for women and young people embarking on their business ventures. In today’s rapidly evolving market with high competition, the presence of an experienced mentor can be a pivotal factor in achieving success.

UNDP Mentorship Programme

Under the project “Aid for Trade in Central Asia,” funded by the government of Finland, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the business association JIA, has developed and launched a mentorship programme aimed at supporting women and youth entrepreneurship in Kyrgyzstan.

The programme engages 32 mentors and 66 mentees across four key sectors:

1. Adventure tourism
2. Craftsmanship (felt and leather products)
3. Natural honey
4. Dried fruits, dried berries, and nuts

These sectors were selected based on their potential to contribute to the development of green value chains (GVCs) in the country. Each mentor involved in the programme brings extensive expertise and experience in their field, providing targeted support to enhance the growth of their mentees' businesses.

Programme Activities

The programme includes a range of activities designed to enhance competencies and development for participants:

• For Mentors:
  • Training to strengthen leadership skills and motivation
  • Recognition and promotion of successful mentors as role models through media channels
  • Support for expanding professional networks and advanced coaching
• For Mentees:
  • Training in essential business skills such as business planning, e-commerce, and leadership
  • Access to grant support for business expansion
  • Regular meetings and consultations with mentors for practical guidance

Each mentee benefits from personalized support from a seasoned mentor, who not only shares their professional expertise but also aids in their personal development.
