Advancing Gender-Inclusive Social Protection for Older Women in Malaysia
Advancing Gender-Inclusive Social Protection for Older Women in Malaysia
October 17, 2024
Although population ageing has emerged as a growing priority in national policies across Asia and the Pacific, there has been limited focus on addressing the gender disparity between men and women when it comes to access to social protection in later life.
Women face multiple disadvantages stemming from societal, cultural, and systemic challenges, including restricted access to resources and limited influence in decision-making. These intersecting factors leave many women without sufficient social security, making it harder for them to maintain independence and dignity in old age.
To effectively address these issues, efforts must focus on promoting gender equality, empowering women both economically and socially, strengthening legal safeguards, and tackling discriminatory practices that disadvantage women throughout their lives.
