This initiative not only empowers Indian Ocean SIDS entrepreneurs but also underscores UNDP's commitment to advancing gender-responsive trade policies.
UNDP backs SME participation from Mauritius, Rodrigues, and Seychelles in AWIEF 2024
November 28, 2024
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Multi-Country Office for Mauritius and Seychelles is facilitating the participation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) at the 10th Africa Women Innovation & Entrepreneurship Forum (AWIEF) in Cape Town, scheduled for November 28-29, 2024. This initiative is aimed at enabling SMEs from these Indian Ocean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to explore significant business opportunities within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
AWIEF is dedicated to empowering women entrepreneurs across the continent. The 2024 edition sets a new benchmark by uniting a record number of key stakeholders within the African entrepreneurial ecosystem to engage in impactful dialogue under the theme "Future For All: Collaborate For Growth. Solve Inequity. Act on Climate."
The Forum features high-level discussions focused on identifying actionable strategies that promote inclusive, equitable, and climate-smart growth throughout Africa. Panel discussions will explore various vital themes, including the pivotal role of the AfCFTA in shaping a new course for the continent. Additionally, a Trade Fair is scheduled to highlight the innovative products and services offered by women-led businesses, providing them with valuable exposure and networking opportunities.
Leveraging the AfCFTA to Expand Business Linkages
The UNDP has selected thirteen small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from the Indian Ocean Region to participate in AWIEF 2024. These include six from Mauritius, four from Seychelles, and three from Rodrigues. The SMEs from Mauritius and Seychelles have previously participated in the Xport Accelerator Programme, conducted in partnership with the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI). Through this program, they received essential training to enhance their competitiveness and sustainability in international markets. Meanwhile, the three SMEs from Rodrigues completed the Export Readiness Program organized by the Economic Development Board (EDB) in August 2024, further preparing them for global trade.
Many SMEs in these regions, and primarily women-led businesses, face significant barriers to accessing regional and global markets. These include limited financing options, insufficient networking opportunities, and a lack of exposure to larger markets. Participation in AWIEF 2024 will give the selected thirteen entrepreneurs an unparalleled opportunity to access new markets, showcase their innovations, connect with potential business partners, and gain valuable insights into leveraging the AfCFTA for business expansion. This initiative not only empowers women entrepreneurs but also underscores UNDP's commitment to advancing gender-responsive trade policies. The outcomes of AWIEF will align seamlessly with UNDP’s broader efforts under the AfCFTA framework, emphasizing women's economic empowerment.
As AWIEF 2024 kicks off, stakeholders across Africa are poised to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaboration. The insights gained and partnerships forged during this event could significantly influence the trajectory of women entrepreneurs, enhancing their visibility and impact within the global marketplace.
