UNDP organizes a technical workshop to assess infrastructures for the implementation of the E-Health Project

A technical workshop to assess sites and infrastructures identified for the implementation of the E-Health project was organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Saturday, 18 November 2023. This event attended by Regional Health Directors and Heads of Community and Area Health Centres, marked a new step in integrating digital technologies into Mauritius' healthcare system.
This assignment is part of the digital health strengthening portfolio which the UNDP is implementing in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness and other stakeholders. The assessment conducted in collaboration with BDO IT Consulting Ltd, from May to October 2023, covered all public health facilities, evaluating the current state of technology infrastructure, including hardware, software, and networking capabilities. The workshop focused on streamlining operational procedures, aiming to optimize processes for the seamless implementation of eHealth solutions without disrupting daily healthcare operations. Additionally, attention was given to the readiness of healthcare professionals to embrace digital tools, with tailored training programs announced to empower the workforce.
In her opening address, Fatuma Sainab Hassan Musa, International Operations Manager and Officer in Charge of UNDP Mauritius, highlighted that: “The first and foremost objective of the site assessment was to evaluate the current state of technology infrastructure in our health facilities. This included an examination of the existing hardware, software, and networking capabilities.” She added that it would take collective efforts and active participation from all stakeholders to pave the way for a healthcare system that is not only digitally empowered but also responsive to the evolving needs of communities.
A noteworthy development of the project is UNDP's appointment of 10 local UN Volunteers as eHealth System Assistants and 2 international UNVs as eHealth IT Implementation Specialists, demonstrating a commitment to substantial support during the eHealth project's implementation.
For the sites assessment, external factors such as connectivity and infrastructure were scrutinized, recognizing the need for reliable connectivity to ensure uninterrupted access to health information. The workshop emphasized addressing potential challenges in these areas proactively.
