2011 Annual Review of UNDP portfolio financed by GEF Chemicals Focal Area

November 27, 2015

This report assesses the performance in 2010-2011 of the portfolio of UNDP projects funded through GEF focal areas on chemicals. The report documents results, impact, lessons, and experiences emerging from the portfolio. Under its chemicals program, the GEF provides incremental funding support to developing countries and countries with economies in transition for projects to phase out Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and reduce POPs releases, phase out Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) and reduce ODS releases; and pilot sound chemicals management and mercury reduction. GEF-funded projects and activities are integrated into UNDP’s programme of work on environment and energy. As of 1 November 2011, under its cumulative portfolio, financed by GEF Chemicals Focal Areas, UNDP is has been supporting 56 countries through 92 projects. These projects assisted the countries to adopt 10 national regulative instruments, train over 182 thousand people in better management of POPs, properly dispose of or safeguard 1,266 metric tons of dangerous POPs. Projects supporting the countries with economies in transition to phase-out the use of ODS also provided important side benefits in terms of reducing the emissions of almost 117 million tons of CO2 equivalent.
