Protecting the Divjake Karavasta National Park and its unique ecosystem
January 23, 2023
The Divjake Karavasta National Park in Albania is a haven for wildlife, with a diverse array of flora and fauna that call it home. However, the park faces numerous challenges in terms of conservation and financing. To address these challenges, UNDP has launched a project called "Enhancing Financial Sustainability of the Protected Areas System in Albania" with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The project aims to expand the number of protected areas in Albania and support them in strengthening their own financing mechanisms. In Divjake Karavasta National Park, one of the pilot areas, UNDP is working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to protect the area and its unique ecosystem. The organization is providing technical and financial support to the ministry to help them implement effective conservation measures and develop sustainable financing models.
One of the major achievements of the project is the construction of a wild bird rehabilitation center in the park. The center, which is the only one of its kind in the Balkans, is equipped to treat and rehabilitate wild birds that pass-through Albania on their migratory routes. This is crucial for the conservation of these species, which are facing numerous threats, including habitat loss and climate change.
UNDP's support is not only helping to protect the Divjake Karavasta National Park and its unique ecosystem, but it is also helping to build a sustainable future for the protected area system in Albania. By working with local communities, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, and other partners, UNDP is helping to ensure that the protected areas in Albania are financially sustainable and can continue to be managed effectively for many years to come.
The project is a shining example of how UNDP's efforts, in partnership with GEF, can bring real and tangible benefits to the natural environment and the people that depend on it. It highlights the importance of protecting the planet's biodiversity and the role that sustainable financing can play in achieving this goal.
