Kyiv, 13 May 2023 – In an effort to foster transparent and unbiased journalism during Ukraine's ongoing recovery, Ukraine’s Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development is organizing a series of comprehensive training sessions to equip journalists with the tools they need to effectively report on the country's dynamic transformation, ensuring that domestic and global publics receive an accurate portrayal of the progress being made. The United Nations Development Programme and the Government of Japan are both supporting the training with technical, logistical and financial support.

Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction Oleksandr Kubrakov said government officials are interested in developing a high-quality media environment in Ukraine. “Only with the help of independent and unbiased professional media will it be possible to achieve an appropriate level of transparency in one of the largest reconstruction projects in history,” he said.

Resident Representative of UNDP in Ukraine Jaco Cilliers said accountability and transparency will form the foundation of the reconstruction of Ukraine. “Transparent and unbiased journalism fosters a well-informed society and attracts international support and investment, bolstering our efforts to rebuild a stronger and more prosperous Ukraine,” he said. “Given the growing scale of destruction and the ongoing full-scale war, the restoration of Ukrainian infrastructure is an unprecedented challenge for the world community, the authorities and the people of Ukraine – in particular local journalists, who must monitor the appropriate use of financial aid and resources for the benefit of the country.”

Aside from promoting transparency and accountability, a well-trained media can help prevent misinformation and disinformation, allowing citizens and international observers to assess the government's actions and ensure the efficient allocation of resources. An effective media not only highlights the successes and setbacks but also sheds light on the needs and aspirations of affected communities, contributing to inclusive and responsive reconstruction efforts. Ultimately, a robust media environment strengthens democracy, promotes trust, and empowers the public to actively participate in shaping Ukraine's post-war future.

Lectures for journalists were conducted by the Deputy Minister of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure Oleksandra Azarkhina, Deputy Minister of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure Serhii Derkach, Deputy Minister of Economy Nadiya Bigun, and Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on the Organization of State Power, Local Self-Government, Regional Development and Urban Planning Olena Shuliak.

Background

The media training session “Restoring Ukraine Together” was organized by the Ministry of Restoration with the support of UNDP with financial support from the Government of Japan. The next training for regional media representatives will be held on 27 May and 10 June.
