The Blue and Green Island Integrated Programme
Accelerating Sustainable Blue and Green Transition in Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
Unlocking nature's potential
The Blue and Green Islands Integrated Programme (BGI-IP) is a transformative and comprehensive initiative designed to address pressing environmental challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The BGI-IP, financed by the Global Environment Facility and led by UNDP, will support 15 SIDS. These nations, due to their small size, remote locations, and reliance on limited resources, are highly vulnerable to climate change impacts and other shocks.
Yet SIDS also have real potential for innovation to turn their most pressing challenges into opportunities for prosperity enabling them to build forward better, greener and bluer.
The BGI-IP seeks to facilitate nature-positive development and reduce ecosystem degradation in SIDS by valuing nature and applying nature-based solutions with specific application to the food, tourism, and urban sectors. The Integrated Programme offers a holistic approach to achieve global environmental benefits, sustainable development, and climate resilience in SIDS.
The Integrated Solution
Working in 15 SIDS around the world, in partnership with UNEP, FAO, the World Bank, WWF-US, IUCN and others, the BGI-IP will target key barriers and shift levers to transform the way ecosystems are utilized and managed in SIDS, generating vital global environmental benefits over time.
Globally, the 15 BGI-IP child projects will work to improve food systems, support sustainable agriculture and fisheries, promote nature-friendly tourism, and develop sustainable urban and rural areas.
“BGI-IP is exciting because the participating SIDS have the potential to become incubators for innovation and nature-based solutions that can be scaled across the SIDS and beyond. We have the opportunity to show what SIDS can achieve as large ocean states.”

The Comoros archipelago is a vital biodiversity hotspot, with significant numbers of noteworthy species found nowhere else on earth. Recognizing the value of this irreplaceable hotspot, the BGI-IP project in Comoros will work to improve food security by valuing ecosystems services (e.g., clean air and water) and promoting sustainable livelihoods in agroforestry, artisanal fishing and organic waste management.
