The UNDP-Global Fund partnership has made significant progress towards ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 in Zimbabwe. Since 2003, the Global Fund has contributed over US$1.796 billion to the fight against HIV and US$2.3 billion for all grants covering HIV, TB, malaria, and health systems strengthening, including the COVID-19 response. Despite the severity of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Zimbabwe, there has been a steady decline in the number of AIDS-related deaths per 100,000 population. In 2018, there were 130.9 AIDS-related deaths per 100,000 people, 164 per 100,000 in 2020 and 141.5 per 100,000 in 2021. 

In 2022, the number of AIDS-related deaths per 100,000 population declined to 120.72 (UNAIDS 2022 HIV estimates) and for every 100 people infected with HIV, 1.11 new infections occurred. Over 1.4 million people in Zimbabwe were tested for HIV, and 98% of them now know their status. Additionally, 94.8% of adults and children with HIV infection in Zimbabwe are now on life-saving antiretroviral therapy (ART). These are just two of the many successes that the partnership achieved in 2022. 

UNDP continued to serve as the Principal Recipient (PR) for the Global Fund HIV grant and the Fund Administrator (FA) for the TB and Malaria grants. Working together with partners, the PR continued to support the Government of Zimbabwe's national responses to HIV, TB, and malaria, operating within the framework of the Government's national health plans and strategies and under the programmatic leadership of the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC). 

This annual report captures the results of the strategic actions and programmatic interventions of the UNDP - Global Fund Project in 2022.
