Podgorica, July 8, 2024 – Young leaders from across Europe and Central Asia gathered today in Podgorica on a three-day workshop, “Generation Nexus: Youth Empowerment and Engagement for the Future,” to forge pathways towards a sustainable and inclusive future, with the support of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Designed by and for youth, this event aims to amplify the voices of young people as key drivers of change and innovation. In the face of rising challenges such as climate change, socio-economic inequalities, and shrinking civic space, the youth of today are the architects of tomorrow's solutions.

“Generation Nexus” seeks to empower young visionaries by providing them with the tools, knowledge, and networks necessary to influence policies and practices that promote sustainable development and social cohesion. This workshop is a platform for young leaders to engage in collaborative sessions, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities to enhance their capacity to address critical issues in their communities.

Ekaterina Paniklova, UNDP Resident Representative in Montenegro, reminded of the UNDP Montenegro’s research that shows a growing intergenerational gap – older generations consider young people disengaged, unmotivated and not interested in social processes. On the other hand, young people do want to engage in development, but they are not offered enough tailor-made opportunities.

“Sustainable development is an approach to human development that aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In a long-lasting partnership with Ministry of Sports and Youth, we have been supporting national and local youth policy development, as one of most comprehensive and important policies. Our latest joint endeavour is the national Youth Strategy 2023-2027. The strategy defines support to young people and their contributions for sustainable development, environmental protection, peace, social cohesion, and their active participation. To enable long-term impact, we support partnerships that use cocreation, codesign, and collective thinking to develop practical and effective policy responses, building resilience in institutions, communities, and people”, Paniklova emphasized.

Dragoslav Šćekić, Minister of Sports and Youth of Montenegro, noted that issues concerning human rights, socio-economic inequality, and climate change can be addressed if young people unite and establish mutual cooperation, despite all the barriers and differences among them.

“Because young people are not just the future, they are also the present of the entire world. Therefore, it is essential to work on strengthening the connections between them at all levels, and this workshop is an opportunity to start down that path. By signing the Declaration on Children, Youth, and Climate Action, the Government of Montenegro has joined a family of over 40 countries and recognized the seriousness of these issues. We have committed to dedicating special attention to these problems and providing strong support in resolving them. Such gatherings give us insight into what we, as decision-makers, must do to improve the current situation”, he added.

Steliana Nedera, Manager of UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub, highlighted that youth across the ECA region are at the forefront of confronting the multifaceted challenges of our time. She noted that, amidst these adversities, there is a growing movement among youth to advocate for better governance, inclusive policies, and sustainable practices.

“This workshop is a testament to your energy, passion, and unwavering commitment to driving change. It is a platform designed not just for dialogue but for action. Over the next few days, we will explore how to harness the power of youth in tackling climate change, promoting peace, and ensuring security. Throughout the entire region, stakeholders have recognized and applauded the significance and impact of youth policies, implementing diverse programs that aim to demonstrate a collective commitment to supporting and empowering young people. Our region, often seen through the lens of its challenges, is also a beacon of potential. The innovative spirit, resilience, and creativity of our young people are critical assets in navigating these turbulent times”, said Nedera.

Throughout the workshop, participants engage in sessions on economic resilience, climate change, and youth leadership and interactive sessions on influencing national policies and fostering youth-led action for peace and sustainability. Finally, participants will conclude with inspiring youth impact stories, the consolidation of ideas, and a closing ceremony that celebrates the contributions of young leaders and outlines the next steps for continued collaboration and action.

“Generation Nexus” is a movement towards a more inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous future for all. By bringing together youth leaders from diverse backgrounds, this event aims to create a nexus of ideas and actions that will resonate long after the workshop concludes, driving forward the collective mission of building resilient and cohesive societies.
