Launch of Business Link Platform: Connecting Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) and Large Corporates in Mauritius
August 7, 2024
Port Louis, Mauritius – August 7, 2024: In a significant stride towards enhancing the business landscape in Mauritius, Business Mauritius (BM), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), launched the Business Link platform today. The event drew key representatives from BM, UNDP and public institutions, SME owners, corporate representatives, and the media.
The Business Link platform is a dedicated web-based application designed to bridge the gap between large corporations and SMEs, facilitating a seamless exchange of business opportunities. Through this platform, companies can register and post procurement notices, while SMEs can register as potential suppliers. This initiative encourages large corporations to diversify their procurement processes by including a broader range of suppliers, thereby fostering a more inclusive business environment. Key features of the platform include automated alerts, customizable profiles, and a comprehensive listing of active procurement notices with detailed contact information. The platform is accessible to both BM members and non-members.
The vital role of SMEs in Mauritius
SMEs play a vital role in the Mauritian economy, representing a significant portion of the workforce and contributing substantially to the GDP. There are approximately 127,000 SMEs in Mauritius and they account for about 54.6 % of employment and contribute nearly 40% to the country's GDP. The Business Link platform, the latest in a long-standing partnership between Business Mauritius and UNDP, is expected to further empower these enterprises by providing them with increased access to procurement opportunities and fostering stronger business relationships with larger companies.
The partnership between BM and UNDP underscores a mutual commitment to supporting SMEs, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. In October 2022, an agreement was signed between the two entities, comprising three major components: conducting Business Pulse Surveys, undertaking a National Employee Engagement Survey, and developing the SME procurement platform.
Forging connections towards a more inclusive business community
During the launching event, Jennifer Webb-de Comarmond, Chair of the SME Committee, Business Mauritius, emphasized the importance of SMEs for economic resilience, stability, and community development in Mauritius. She highlighted that the platform would enable larger corporates to have direct access to a network of SMEs, contributing to more SME-inclusive procurement decisions. Ms. Webb-de Comarmond concluded by stating that the Business Link platform would help forge connections and create a business community where SMEs are an indispensable link.
Mr. Kevin Ramkaloan, CEO of Business Mauritius, noted that the Business Link platform aligns with BM's vision of creating a more inclusive, dynamic, and prosperous business community. He described the platform as more than just a procurement tool, emphasizing its role in unlocking opportunities for businesses of all sizes through enhanced connections. Mr. Ramkaloan acknowledged the invaluable support from UNDP and the members of the Economic Commission and SME working group in developing the platform.
Ms. Amanda Serumaga, UNDP Mauritius and Seychelles Resident Representative, reiterated UNDP's commitment to advancing its partnerships in the private sector space. Ms. Serumaga highlighted UNDP's crucial role in generating knowledge through surveys conducted in collaboration with Business Mauritius, enhancing the operational efficiency of small businesses, supporting national strategies with a focus on empowering women in business, and developing digital platforms for market integration.
In conclusion, the launch of the Business Link platform marks a pivotal step towards strengthening the SME sector in Mauritius. By enhancing market access, facilitating trade partnerships, and supporting capacity building, this initiative promises to create a more resilient and dynamic business environment.
