A three-day comprehensive workshop under the Xport Accelerator programme was organised by the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), from 14 to 16 October 2024. The event, attended 15 selected SMEs, aimed at enhancing their understanding of the African market and the intricacies of exporting.

Over the three days, representatives from 15 Mauritian SMEs, along with three from Seychelles, engaged in intensive training sessions covering crucial topics such as export strategy, international marketing, and financial risk management. The workshop also covered themes such as logistics, international trade requirements and standards, brand positioning, digital marketing, financial and banking services. Participants had the opportunity to gain a detailed overview of trade agreements from institutions such as the MCCI, the Customs Department of the Mauritius Revenue Authority, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and International Trade. Numerous exchanges also took place between SME representatives and  experts, allowing participants to clarify their questions about exporting to African markets under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework and the multidimensional challenges they have faced so far.

During his address, Mr. Patrice Marie, Vice-President of the MCCI, reiterated that SMEs contribute about 40% to the country's GDP, thereby covering 55% of employment. “There are nearly 120,000 SMEs actively engaged in various sectors across Mauritius with evident potential for expansion into international markets. The export of services from Mauritius to the African continent is experiencing rapid growth in banking, medical, commercial, and other sectors. With the momentum generated by the African Continental Free Trade Area, we view the African continent as a highly promising region for service sectors."

Ms. Amanda Serumaga, UNDP Resident Representative for Mauritius and Seychelles, highlighted the potential of the African market for entrepreneurship and trade promotion. " “Africa, with its rich tapestry of cultures, resources, and innovative spirit, is swiftly emerging as a global hub for entrepreneurship, driving innovation and shaping markets. Yet, many entrepreneurs still face significant barriers when it comes to exporting their goods and services. To fully unlock the vast potential that African entrepreneurs possess, we must commit ourselves to the relentless pursuit of capacity building—an endeavour central to the mission of the UNDP.”

The Xport Accelerator programme serves as a catalyst for Mauritian SMEs aspiring to expand into the African market. By providing essential training and fostering collaboration with industry experts, this initiative aims at creating an enabling environment for SMEs that fosters growth and sustainability.
