Lviv, 21 November 2024 – The TECH4Life International Congress, uniting over 40 leading experts and 15 companies, civil society organizations, and professional communities to showcase innovative assistive technologies that are transforming lives, was officially launched today. Organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine with financial support from the Government of the Netherlands, the event highlights the essential role of assistive technologies (AT) in fostering resilience and inclusion – particularly for people with disabilities who are affected by the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The event focuses on the transformative potential of assistive technologies to improve mobility, communication, and access to employment. The event participants explored practical innovations that address barriers and enable individuals to regain their independence and lead fulfilling lives. Cutting-edge technologies – such as eye-tracking systems, virtual reality tools for rehabilitation, and advanced communication devices – were showcased, providing a comprehensive view of how these solutions are reshaping accessibility.

Christophoros Politis, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Ukraine, emphasized the significance of the Tech4lLife Congress for Ukraine’s recovery efforts:

“This Congress is a platform for innovation, collaboration, and cross-fertilization of ideas,” Politis said. “Through assistive technologies, we’re aiming at supporting recovery efforts and laying the foundation for a more inclusive Ukraine. By breaking barriers and promoting accessibility, we empower individuals, communities, and private sector actors to rebuild the lives of Ukrainians and contribute meaningfully to societal recovery and a better future for all.”

Tetiana Lomakina, Advisor and Presidential Commissioner for Barrier-Free Environment, underscored the importance of assistive technologies in empowering people with disabilities:

“Assistive technologies are a lifeline, especially in the current conditions,” Lomakina said. “They enable people to overcome challenges, regain independence, and actively participate in rebuilding their lives and communities. TECH4Life makes a significant contribution to our shared vision of a barrier-free Ukraine, where everyone has the opportunity to realize their potential.”

Andriy Sadovyi, the mayor of Lviv, highlighted the value of partnerships in advancing accessibility:

“Lviv is always a welcoming platform for events that showcase how technology and innovation can transform lives,” Sadovyi said. “Our mission is to gather and share such experiences. Through collaboration between authorities, the civil society sector, and businesses, we are taking a step toward a barrier-free society.”

This congress serves as a vital platform for collaboration among public and private stakeholders, including AT developers, rehabilitation specialists, and government representatives. The discussions at the event emphasized the importance of making assistive technologies widely available and affordable, and ensuring they meet the unique needs of individuals. The exhibition and interactive sessions demonstrated how these technologies support everyday life, workplace adaptations, and social inclusion, offering practical tools for integration into various aspects of life.

Ukraine’s recovery efforts highlight the increasing need for inclusive solutions as the number of people with disabilities continues to grow due to conflict-related injuries. The Congress underscores the importance of fostering partnerships across sectors to address these challenges effectively. By facilitating dialogue and innovation, TECH4Life aims to ensure that assistive technologies become a cornerstone of recovery and resilience efforts, paving the way for a barrier-free future.

The event’s comprehensive programme includes thematic sessions on AT provision, masterclasses for hands-on exploration of technologies, and an exhibition of state-of-the-art solutions. Attendees engaged in discussions on workplace adaptations, rehabilitation innovations, and tools for enhancing daily life, with a strong emphasis on collaboration and knowledge exchange.

TECH4Life is not just a showcase of technological advancements but a crucial step in Ukraine’s journey toward a barrier-free society. With the war significantly increasing the number of people requiring accessibility solutions, the congress serves both as a testament to resilience and a call to action for inclusive recovery. By fostering partnerships and promoting innovation, this event sets the stage for a sustainable future where assistive technologies are accessible and impactful for all who need them.
