The road to biodegradable packaging in Georgia. 2021

Georgia has been introducing legislative changes since 2018 to speed up the transition to sustainable production and consumption and sustainable waste management.
Production, import and sale of plastic bags have been banned as of April 2019. Currently, only biodegradable and compostable packaging can be produced, imported or sold in Georgia.
These changes had a significant impact on the packaging industry, pushing Georgian companies towards exploring new business opportunities in the field of biodegradable packaging.
In November 2020, the European Union (EU) and UNDP organised a working meeting of representatives of the private sector, government and international experts, aiming to discuss the international experience in the area of biodegradable packaging and the prospects of Georgian business on the national and international markets.
"The Road to Biodegradable Packaging in Georgia" presents a summary of this discussion.
