Shelling of United Nations Compound in Gaza City
November 14, 2023
East Jerusalem – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has received reports today that a shell from a tank has hit the United Nations compound in Gaza City that UNDP managed until 13 October, when UN staff vacated the premises. Early reports indicate that there were no one killed or injured in this incident.
This is the second such incident in two days following the shelling reported on the evening of 11 November, which resulted in several individuals being killed and injured.
Following the 11 November shelling, it was reported to us that the majority of people residing in the compound have voluntarily left. However, many individuals remain sheltered within the compound. UNDP remains deeply concerned about the safety of all individuals who remain in the compound.
We strongly condemn the targeting of UN facilities and reiterate that their inviolability must be protected and that the principles of international humanitarian law, must be respected and upheld even in times of war.
