Strategic Engagement Dialogue on Critical Minerals
“As demand for critical energy transition minerals surges, so must action. Together, let us turn the transition towards justice and equity” - the UN Secretary-General at the UN Climate Change Conference in Azerbaijan.
Global climate commitments at #COP29 will necessarily increase demand for the critical minerals needed for renewable energy. Moving forward, ensuring a fair and sustainable supply chain for critical minerals will be vital.
UNDP Global Policy Centre for Governance will host a Strategic Engagement Dialogue on Critical Minerals in Geneva on 21 November. Participants from 10 countries, the UN, international organisations and research institutions will join the dialogue.
Building on the agreed principles and recommendations of the UN Secretary General’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, discussions will focus on the transformative action needed to align short-term demand for critical minerals with long-term sustainable development goals and climate commitments. The strategic dialogue will inform the future work in participant countries and support future global follow-up on the Panel’s recommendations.
Held under the Chatham House rule, the dialogue aims to provide a safe space for a broad range of participants to discuss complex questions and sensitive issues. The event is part of UNDP GPCG’s ongoing series of strategic dialogues.
