The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has since 1990 been producing the Human Development Report and its Human Development Index, which ranks all countries in the world by their level of human development. This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the Human Development Report. The theme of the 2021/22 report is reflective of ongoing global socio-economic challenges: “Uncertain Times, Unsettled Lives: Shaping our Future in a World in Transformation”. The report was globally launched on 08th September 2022 while in South Sudan, the report was launched on September 9th, 2022.
The report examines how inequalities and uncertainty are reinforcing one another to drive polarization and undermine our sense of control over our lives – also building on the results of the special report on human security launched earlier this year, which found that six out of seven people globally reported feeling insecure about many aspects of their lives, even before the Covid-19 pandemic hit.
