Statement by UNDP Administrator on the Floods in Libya
September 12, 2023
With great concern, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is closely following the impacts of devastating flooding that hit eastern Libya on 10 September 2023 in the wake of Storm Daniel. That includes a rapidly rising death toll including thousands of people missing, families forced to flee from their homes, and catastrophic damage to infrastructure.
Once the flood waters recede, there will be a long road to recovery. As part of the United Nations family, and under the leadership of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), UNDP stands ready to work with Libyan authorities and all partners to provide affected communities with the support they need.
On behalf of the UNDP, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives, as well as to all those affected by this unprecedented disaster.
