A Drive for Sustainable Mobility in Sri Lanka
With the socio-economic crisis gripping the country, a shift towards adopting sustainable mobility approaches has been identified as a necessity for a green recovery process and to build resilience for the future.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sri Lanka is working closely with the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Power and Energy, National Transport Commission and the Department of Motor Traffic among other partners, to boost the uptake of e-Mobility in the country in order to create a greener, cleaner, and inclusive Sri Lanka.
The conversion of petrol three-wheelers to e-Tuk Tuks as a means to:
- Ease the impacts of the economic crisis on the people in Sri Lanka
- Enhance mobility
- Facilitate low-carbon, inclusive, equitable development pathways within Sri Lanka
- Revive SMEs and essential services
The proposed three-phased project consists of an incubation phase, a demonstration phase and an acceleration phase.
The pilot phase will test conversion to e-Tuk Tuks.
The demonstration phase will engage the finance sector for conversions.
The acceleration phase will use market forces for conversion through concessional financing.
The pilot project aims to support the revival of micro level/informal sector economic activities to inject much needed currency into the local economy.
In this phase, 200 petrol three-wheelers will be converted to e-Tuk Tuks. 100 petrol three-wheelers from each of the following locations will be selected:
- Pettah
- Makumbura
Facts and Figures of e-Tuk Tuks
Qualifying Vehicles and Owners
- Preferential selections are given to women owners/operators
- Parties from Makumbura and Pettah will be eligible
- The three-wheeler should not be older than 10 years from the date of manufacture
- Priority will be given to applicants whose livelihood is dependent on a single three-wheeler
- Only petrol 4-stroke three-wheelers are eligible
- UNDP will bear the full cost of conversion to e-Tuk Tuk
Applications and Terms
Seed funds were provided through UNDP's Funding Windows to kick-start this work around renewable energy solutions and support the Government of Sri Lanka in achieveing its renewable energy targets and economic recovery through green development. Read more about UNDP Funding Windows
