Wetlands are crucial to our environment and managing them effectively can be a difficult task. Wetlands play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity, regulating water flow, and mitigating the impact of natural disasters such as floods. They also serve as carbon sinks, helping to combat climate change by storing large amounts of carbon. The Global Climate Change Alliance Suriname Adaptation (GCCA +) Project, funded by the European Union (EU), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Suriname, is providing valuable support to governmental institutions, organizations, and communities committed to preserving wetlands.

As a direct result of this support, the Bering Hole Mangrove Conservation and Rehabilitation Project was successfully executed through a productive collaboration involving the local community of Nickerie and Anton De Kom University Suriname. In addition, the GCCA+’s support has facilitated the development of a comprehensive national wetland classification system and map in partnership with SBB and Celos.

With the right tools and a commitment to sustainability, we can make a positive impact on these precious ecosystems. Thus, to mark this year's Wetland Day celebrations, support included providing essential equipment and enhancing capacity within these institutions and communities. The GCCA + Phase 2 handed over a Pan boat and a longtail outboard motor to the Nature Conservation Division (NCD) of the Ministry of Land Policy and Forest. The boat and outboard motor can be used in shallow waters by the NCD to facilitate optimum patrolling and monitoring activities in the Bigi Pan Multi-Use Management Area which hosts a large wetland area.
These efforts inspire us to continue working towards a sustainable future, where we can safeguard our natural resources for generations to come.
World Wetland Day is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the need to protect these valuable ecosystems by adhering to the required regulations and permits.
