Marathon for Hope: ATF 2023 Sparks Change in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS
November 27, 2023
In an inspiring demonstration of unity and dedication to combat HIV, UNDP took an active role in supporting the AIDS Trust Fund Marathon in Morogoro. This event brought together government officials, private stakeholders, and local communities in a shared mission. Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national priorities outlined in FYDP III, this fundraising initiative marked a significant step leading up to World AIDS Day. The aim was to raise 500,000,000.00 shillings to support the reduction of HIV infections, combat stigma and discrimination, and enhance HIV services for a diverse range of populations, including children, adolescents, men, and key groups.
Beyond its fundraising goal, the marathon played a pivotal role in promoting community engagement and identifying pathways for development and collaboration, deeply reflecting the mission of UNDP. Government officials, private stakeholders, and local communities actively participated, resulting in a substantial financial boost for the AIDS Trust Fund.
Dr. Charles Mahera, Deputy PS of the Ministry of State, President's Office, Local Government, and Regional Administration, the Guest of Honor at ATF Marathon 2023, emphasised how this event not only contributes to controlling AIDS but also places a spotlight on World AIDS Day, fostering awareness and understanding. He stated, "We are grateful for UNDP’s support and the involvement of relevant stakeholders in securing funds to address HIV-related issues. The government of Tanzania will create opportunities for stakeholders and citizens to contribute to the AIDS Trust Fund, reducing reliance on foreign aid."
This collaboration between UNDP, the Tanzanian government, TACAIDS, and other partners underscores the collective commitment to breaking the chains of stigma, reducing infections, and enhancing services for People Living with HIV. This united effort signifies Tanzania's unwavering determination to stride into the future with a resolute focus on achieving epidemic control and realising the end of AIDS by 2030 – zero new infections, zero AIDS-related deaths, and zero stigma and discrimination. The ATF Marathon 2023 serves as a powerful testament to the potential of collective action and shared responsibility in building a healthier, more resilient future.
