Kyiv, 2 February 2023 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine, with financial support from the Government of Poland, organized courses for mastering partial competencies in labour construction professions. Forty-five residents of Chernihiv and nearby communities, who need to restore housing destroyed because of hostilities, took part in the training.

The courses concerned three labour professions: installation of plasterboard structures, plastering; electricians for lighting and lighting networks and bricklayer. The training was based at the Chernihiv Vocational Construction Lyceum and the Chernihiv Vocational Lyceum of Railway Transport.

Having acquired new skills and abilities, course graduates can form teams for the complex repair of damaged or destroyed property, and apply the acquired knowledge in everyday situations.

Jaco Cilliers, interim UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, noted that UNDP seeks to provide Ukrainian communities affected by the war with all the tools and opportunities needed for recovery. “We are convinced that these courses can be the first step towards retraining citizens in professions relevant to the labour market,” he said. “Thanks to generous support from the Government of Poland and partners on the ground, we ensured that the demand for such educational services is very high. Moreover, some of the participants have already found jobs in new professions.”

Background

The training was organized with support from UNDP in Ukraine in the framework of the United Nations Recovery and Peacebuilding Programme (UN RPP), with financial support from the Government of Poland.

The UN RPP is being implemented by four United Nations agencies: the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Eleven international partners are supporting the Programme: the European Union (EU), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, and the governments of Canada, Denmark, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland.
