Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: 17 September 2024 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Yemen and the Government of Japan have signed a US $5 million agreement to enhance efficiency of the Port of Aden. Building on the achievements of the first phase of the project, this new project includes reconstruction of the marine workshop and the procurement of a mooring boat and two moveable maintenance workshops, towards an increase in the efficiency and safety of vessels who use the port. 

The Port of Aden serves as a main gateway for cargo entering Yemen, crucial for ensuring commercial, humanitarian, and recovery activities, especially as most of the country’s food supply is imported. The Port of Aden has been affected by protracted conflict and lack of maintenance, leading to limited operational capacity to handle incoming vessels, with long waiting periods, thus reducing its efficiency. 

“UNDP is grateful for Japan’s continued support to improve operational capacity of the Port of Aden. Together we’re ensuring the cost-effective efficient delivery of humanitarian and development assistance and commercial goods to the people of Yemen,” says Zena Ali Ahmad, UNDP Yemen Resident Representative. 

Mr. Kazuhiro Higashi, Charge d'Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Japan for Yemen, notes, “The Government and people of Japan are proud to contribute to the further development of the Port of Aden to enhance trade and economic development for the people of Yemen. Sound infrastructure, including maintenance workshops, will ensure safety and productivity at the port.”

This new project builds on a previous contribution from Japan which rehabilitated two transit sheds at the Port of Aden and installed wireless internet with handheld communication devices at the Aden Container Terminal. Both phases of the project were identified in consultation with port authorities, ensuring targeted beneficial support to local development.
