UNDP in Afghanistan

About us

Who we are

UNDP is the leading United Nations organization fighting to end the injustice of poverty, inequality, and climate change. Working with our broad network of experts and partners in 170 countries, we help nations to build integrated, lasting solutions for people and the planet.

Mission and vision

UNDP’s mandate is to end poverty, build democratic governance, rule of law, and inclusive institutions. We advocate for change, and connect countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life.

The UN Charter

The Charter of the United Nations was signed in San Francisco on 26 June 1945, at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organization, and came into force on 24 October 1945. Its purposes and principles are to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations based on equal rights and self-determination, and to achieve international co-operation in solving economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian challenges without distinction for race, sex, language, or religion.

History

UNDP is based on the merging of the United Nations Expanded Programme of Technical Assistance, created in 1949, and the United Nations Special Fund, established in 1958. UNDP, as we know it now, was established in 1966 by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

UNDP has been working in Afghanistan for more than 50 years on poverty and inequality, governance, resilience, environment, energy and gender equality. Under the broader framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in close coordination with other UN agencies, UNDP is supporting the Afghan people’s aspiration for peace, prosperity, and sustainability.

Afghanistan officially joined the United Nations on 19 November 1946 as the Kingdom of Afghanistan. As one of the UN's earliest members, Afghanistan has contributed to the work of the world body, including through its diverse and unique culture.

UNDP Afghanistan is part of the United Nations Development Programme, the global development network of the UN. We work with our partners to address the complex challenges facing Afghanistan. Our new Strategic Plan 2022-2025 outlines our vision, goals, and solutions for eradicating poverty, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and building a green, inclusive future for all. We leverage our local experience, global network, innovation, and development financing to deliver value and impact.
