UNDP in Libya

UNDP works in Libya with authorities, civil society organizations and private sector partners to promote a peaceful and inclusive transition. We support the path towards sustainable peace through by strengthening local peacebuilding and resilience, democratic governance and facilitating energy transition to mitigate the effects of climate change.   

As an international organization on the ground in 170 countries and territories, we offer an international perspective with local implementation of policies, skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities, to help set the foundation for longer-term, inclusive and sustainable development as set out in the Sustainable Development Goals.

Established in Libya in 1976, UNDP consistently adapts its support to meet the country’s priorities. We help the people of Libya create their own path towards sustainable development by strengthening the capacity of public institutions, promoting civic and political engagement, encouraging local development solutions, restoring social infrastructure and services, spurring local economic recovery, and building individual, community and institutional resilience.

What we do

Guided by the Country Program Document for 2023-2025 which contributes directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Framework for 2023-2025 agreed with the authorities, UNDP supports three main interlinked, inclusive development pathways.

1. Combating political and administrative fragility by enhancing the accountability, effectiveness and gender-responsiveness of governance mechanisms;
2. Building peace and resilience through strengthened local institutions delivering meaningful improvement of living conditions at the community level;
3. Promoting sustainable green growth and enhancing resilience to climate change.

UNDP will do so through a variety of partnerships, pooling resources from national and international partners, helping authorities deliver using transparent and accountable management arrangements.

Goal

UNDP Libya’s goal is to improve the lives of the people of Libya through better governance, inclusive communities, notably for women and youth, and a transition towards cleaner energy.
