UTech students and their teachers immerse themselves in the sustainable mining culture with the new Bachelors degree programme in Mines and Quarry Management. Students are learning environmental sustainability, mines closure, restoration and rehabilitation. Now the programme is poised to play a significant role in cementing government’s regulatory interventions and to address persisting challenges of poor mining and quarrying methods. Implemented by the UNDP Multi Country Office in Jamaica and the Mines and Geology Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining under the Development Minerals Programme. Financed by the Organization of African Caribbean and Pacific States (ACP) and the European Union (EU)
Semi-Precious Stones Are Good Business for Jamaican Artisans
Semi-precious stones like Jaspers, Agates, Quartz, Calcite, Malachite, and Azurite are scattered along riverbeds, riverbanks and fields across Jamaica, indistinguishable from common rocks to all but the trained eye. The social enterprise Mae Markets is working with Jamaican artisans to make wearable, utilitarian and healing art pieces for local markets. They've also opened the doors to their downtown Kingston location, Artisan House for creatives who want to do business using semi precious stones and other locally sourced materials. Grant provided by the Development Minerals Programme implemented by UNDP. The Development Minerals Programme is strengthening the sector to showcase and fulfil its economic potential with financing from the Organization of African Caribbean and Pacific States (ACP) and the European Union. In Jamaica, UNDP is implementing in partnership with the Mines and Geology Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining.
Digitally Mapping a Safer Future for Mining
Jamaica’s mining lease process is now digital, which is paving the way for greater efficiencies & environmental safeguards. With its new Mining Cadastre branded JAMinCAD, the Mines and Geology Division is now digitally coordinating mine leases and applications. JAMinCAD's digital map is loaded with information on mines, upcoming applications and displays them in relation to Protected Areas, roads, and other important assets. Funded by the Development Minerals Programme implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
