In the heart of Shkodër, Albania, a formidable challenge confronts the 140 children attending "Ngjyrat" kindergarten—one that climate change has rendered more daunting. Shkodra, like the rest of Albania, grapples with extreme seasonal shifts, where winter plunges into bone-chilling cold and summer scorches with relentless heat. The consequence: a struggling electrical infrastructure and frequent power outages disrupting the town.

But, thanks to the "Market Transformation for Solar Energy PV Acceleration" project, a glimmer of hope was on the horizon. This project is a vital step towards Albania's sustainable development, accelerating the implementation of the NDC action plan to reach enhanced targets. Made possible by funding from the Government of Japan, UNDP is spearheading the installation of solar panels across ten public buildings in four municipalities, including Shkodra. "Ngjyrat" kindergarten and "Bep Tusha" kindergarten, essential public institutions, are set to harness the benefits of solar energy.

Eager anticipation fills the hearts of educators and caregivers at "Ngjyrat" kindergarten and creche as they await the installation of solar panels. This upgrade guarantees an uninterrupted power supply, ensuring cost savings for the supporting municipality. Moreover, the adoption of solar energy by kindergartens stands as a powerful contribution to combatting climate change.

Manjola Lika, a teacher, expressed her excitement, "We are overjoyed that solar panels will be installed. This will provide substantial relief for both the staff and children, while also presenting an excellent opportunity to educate children about renewable energy."

The project's ambitious goal is to achieve a direct installed capacity of 1000 kW of solar PV within its lifetime, granting 1500 people access to clean, green energy. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with the national target of 490 MW of solar PV installed capacity by 2030, potentially creating 1600 new green jobs.

In collaboration with the Albania-Japan Chamber of Trade and Industry, the project team is providing comprehensive feasibility studies to interested businesses, empowering them to make informed decisions regarding the adoption of solar power.

The "Market Transformation for Solar Energy PV Acceleration" project marks a significant milestone in Albania's path towards a sustainable future. As solar panels grace the rooftops of "Ngjyrat" and "Ben Tusha" kindergartens, a new era of energy efficiency and environmental consciousness dawns upon them.

With the installation of solar panels, these institutions can look forward to cozy warmth during harsh winters and refreshing coolness during sweltering summers.
