Transitioning Futures, Anticipating Change: Socio-economic Futures of Malaysia's Climate & Demographic Transition

July 30, 2024

The foresight report highlights the intersection between two megatrends — climate change and Malaysia’s changing demographic — and maps out the future implications of these shifts on two socio-economic areas; firstly, the nation’s economic structures and the labour market, and secondly, the well-being of the elderly and their families. Through collective foresight, engagement with experts and consultation with 540 stakeholders nationwide, 19 key intersections of climate and demographic change and 91 signals of change were identified, leading to 3 plausible futures. The report also highlights the result of wind- tunelling analysis of governance structure notably 49 acts and 61 policies — Malaysia’s future preparedness showcases areas of strength alongside notable gaps.
