From the 3rd to the 4th of February 2019, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), organized a two day training workshop on  the “Development of National Indicators for Human Rights”. The workshop targeted key staff members of the Saudi Human Rights Commission in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and aimed at enhancing the approach of using indicators to measure progress made and achieved in realizing human rights as stipulated in conventions and treaties ratified by the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. 

The two-day workshop comprised of two parts, the first half covered the technical part which consisted of three sessions, while the second half consisted of group work and practical exercises. Mr. Mohammad Al Batayneh, an expert from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Regional Hub in Amman covered the section on Results-Based Management and the methodology to develop indicators to measure progress made in development related work. Mr. Ismail Lubed, an expert on Demography and Statistics from Statistics Division in ESCWA, covered the section on using the best and the most practical methodologies to collect information, data and tools for analysis. Mr. Mazen Shaqoura, the Deputy Regional Representative of OHCHR office in MENA covered the methodology to develop specific human rights indicators with special emphasis on structural, process and outcomes indicators.
