Climate Promise

Climate change presents the single biggest threat to sustainable development and is already causing widespread, unprecedented impacts that disproportionately burden the poorest, marginalized and most vulnerable. These impacts could drive 100 million people into extreme poverty by 2030. Climate change will reverse hard-won human development gains, worsen inequalities, and trigger forced migration and conflict. It is also a key driver of disaster risks, leading to increased frequency, magnitude and impacts of climate-induced disasters on lives, livelihoods and socio-economic development.

UNDP’s goal is to ensure that all countries enhancing their NDCs can access the necessary financial and technical support to do so. Central to this strategy is UNDP’s engagement with, and through, the NDC Partnership – especially in the context of the Partnership’s new initiative, the Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP), which also is supporting enhancement of NDCs and fast-tracking of NDC implementation. UNDP has prioritised three categories of countries under the Promise: ambition champions, Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and high emitters. All country support will be demand-driven and needs-based.
