Hala - A Journey of Resilience

Hala had to flee her home in Hama in the dark of night when the devastating earthquake hit Syria in February 2023. Having lost everything, she has been living in a shelter with her husband and three children. When UNDP’s Women Safe Space mobile teams visited her in the shelter, she was in obvious distress and that is where she received psychosocial support and guidance on how to better manage stress. She also applied for the Youth Empowerment Programme, another UNDP-supported project where she received entrepreneurship and business development training followed by the needed productive assets. She was able to open her own women’s hair salon and now can proudly provide for her family.

Living with Hope: UNDP and Finland Empowering PWDs in Lattakia

Jaafar is one of 85 persons with disabilities (PWDs) from the Lattakia and Tartous governorates who received vocational training, equipment and psychosocial support through UNDP’s Qader (I am able) project with funding from Finland. Support from Finland to disability inclusion through UNDP enabled the provision of over 1,200 assistive devices, 200 prosthetic services and two prosthetic workshops. It has also enhanced the capacities of 50 Service providers to ensure sustainable and quality services for PWDs. In addition, 450 PWDs benefited from socio-economic integration through livelihood support and access to essential services.

The Power of Inclusive Entrepreneurship_Alaa's Story

Alaa is a 37-year-old father of three from Daria in rural Damascus. He dropped out of school at the age of 13 years and started cutting hair to earn an income and support his family. He then became a mobile barber. Alaa is one of 160 persons with disabilities who received vocational training and monetary support through UNDP’s Hemmeh (determination in English) project with funding from Finland. The support enabled Alaa to establish his businesses, create a sustainable income and provide for his family.
