Asylum seekers from the Western Balkans typically have very low success rates, which often results in many having to return to their home countries. Returnees’ needs and priorities upon return often mirror factors that initially compelled them to leave: many returnees continue to grapple with similar challenges-impoverished, risk being invisible to the system and constrained in accessing services to fully participate in society.
The Reports, prepared within the EU-funded UNDP implemented Regional Returnee Reintegration Project, deep dive into the reintegration process of returnees in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo (UNSCR1999), and Montenegro, providing insights into the experiences and challenges of returnees in these three Western Balkan (WB) economies. Focus on the needs of vulnerable returnees, they probe into the economic and social aspects of reintegration with recommendations on how institutions can more effectively support returnees
