Investing for gender equality and inclusive climate action

November 13, 2024

The UNDP-OECD cross-regional dialogue on "Investing for Gender Equality and Inclusive Climate Action" recently gathered over 250 attendees from parliaments, governments, the private sector, and international organizations from around 40 countries to Istanbul, Türkiye. Held ahead of COP29, the event provided a platform to explore the gender-climate nexus and the unique role women play in advancing a just transition.

Experts exchanged good practices and recommendations for integrated approaches that recognize and prioritize the contributions women make to climate action.  Key focus areas included opening access to gender-responsive STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education; targeting women to enter and advance in green jobs; expanding gender-responsive climate finance; formalizing the care economy; and embedding gender-responsive strategies within Nationally Determined Contributions and National Adaptation Plans.  Realizing these goals means ensuring that women are not only beneficiaries but also lead the way in government, policymaking, industry, academia, and civil society to shape climate action.  These discussions culminated in targeted sectoral sessions on agriculture, education, energy, health, and peace and security, producing a collection of action points.

The outcomes document reflects the key takeaways from the event to support stakeholders who are committed to advancing gender-responsive climate action. It outlines steps for transitioning from siloed efforts to strengthened collaboration and capacity-building for a sustainable and just future.
