Our Focus
Sustainable Development
Integrated solutions for sustainable development
UNDP supports the Government of Guinea-Bissau to tackle complex development challenges and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through incorporation of SDGs into the national policies. The 17 SDGs are integrated—that is, they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.
Local Governance and Economic Development
Through capacity building and establishment of Micro and Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), UNDP strives to create increased opportunities for employment and livelihood. UNDP promotes micro-credit as a powerful tool to reduce poverty and inequalities and plans to encourage green finance, including climate finance, through strengthening the capacities and establishing an enabling environment for commercial banks.
National Protected Areas System
UNDP helps Guinea-Bissau to strengthen the financial sustainability and management effectiveness of the national protected areas system (SNAP). UNDP is making efforts for the conservation of 952,172 hectares of critical natural habitats through the long-term financial sustainability of national network of PAs, which will cover 26% of the country.
Global Environment Conservation
Despite having a wealth of natural resources, Guinea-Bissau faces challenges in environmental conservation due to acute poverty and fragility. Climate variability, biodiversity loss and land degradation threaten the vital sectors of the national economy. The low altitude of coastal areas and existence of many ecosystems further increase environmental threats. UNDP supports the Government of Guinea-Bissau to make better decisions to meet and maintain global environmental obligations.
