Groundbreaking CAD $5 Million Project for Aqaba Biodiversity Enhancement

Amman, 15 February 2024 - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Jordan and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) announce the allocation of CAD $5 million from Global Affairs Canada for a groundbreaking project aimed at enhancing marine and terrestrial biodiversity in Aqaba.
The project, implemented in collaboration with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), focuses on nature-based solutions (NBS) to protect and restore coastal ecosystems both on land and underwater. This holistic approach includes introducing native coastal plant species, constructing artificial reefs, and fostering sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
Key Highlights of the Project:
- Marine and Terrestrial Biodiversity: The project targets the Aqaba Marine Reserve, employing innovative strategies to preserve and enhance both marine and terrestrial biodiversity.
- Restoration of Ecosystems: From constructing artificial reefs to introducing native plant species, the project focuses on the comprehensive restoration of both underwater and terrestrial ecosystems.
- Nature-Based Solutions (NBS): UNDP Jordan, in collaboration with ASEZA, will implement NBS to protect and restore coastal ecosystems, promoting sustainability and resilience.
- Women Empowerment in Biodiversity Conservation: The project emphasizes supporting women engagement in biodiversity conservation, fostering inclusivity and empowering women in the Gulf of Aqaba.
- Livelihood Opportunities: In addition to ecological restoration, the project aims to create livelihood opportunities for Aqaba’s community, contributing to economic development.
- Scientific Research and Innovation: Cutting-edge scientific research will play a pivotal role in protecting the Gulf of Aqaba's biodiversity, aligning with global frameworks and strategies.
This initiative aligns with key national and international strategies and policies, contributing to Jordan's Economic Modernisation Vision Executive Program 2023–2025, the National Women’s Strategy, and the Jordanian National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.
