Nur-Sultan, 18 May 2022 – Today, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), together with national partners, held the final session of national consultations to discuss the priority environmental Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The results of the discussions will be presented at the international meeting "Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity”, which will be held in Stockholm, Sweden, on 2-3 June 2022, on the eve of the World Environment Day.
National consultations were held online and offline in all regions of Kazakhstan. More than 2,000 people from representatives of local executive bodies, non-governmental organisations, youth initiatives and universities participated in the consultations. The aim of the national consultations is to identify the SDGs with the highest priority for Kazakhstan and to find effective ways to achieve them.
"Discussions with local communities during the national consultations have helped identify the main directions and issues that need to be addressed in Kazakhstan. The issues of climate change, nature conservation, pollution control and recovery from COVID-19 are particularly relevant for the country. We hopethat these consultations and the Stockholm+50 meeting will contribute to the efforts in Kazakhstan for developing sustainable solutions and achieving the SDGs," said Yakup Beris, UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan.
The consultations focused on three areas: achieving a healthy planet and prosperity for all; achieving a sustainable and inclusive recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic; accelerating the implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development in the context of the Decade of Action. They suggest that in Kazakhstan the most important issues under the SDG agenda are related to the issues of market regulation of tariffs for traditional energy sources and development of renewable energy, creation of "green" jobs, access to clean water and sanitation, waste recycling, sustainable agriculture, environmental education and access to green financing.
Participants also made recommendations for improving Kazakhstan's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), the Green Kazakhstan National Project and other policies and measures at the national level to accelerate progress toward sustainable development.
According to the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sweden to the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mats Foyer, “The Stockholm +50 conference is being held to advance action needed to recover and build forward from the pandemic and towards a healthy planet. It will provide a platform for policy development and partnership building for transitioning to a sustainable global economy.”
The Stockholm+50 international meeting is held in accordance with the UN General Assembly resolution of May 2021 with the aim of accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during the Decade of Action (2020-2030), including through sustainable and inclusive recovery from the COVID -19 pandemic.
