Renewable energy is the gateway to Sustainable Development
September 20, 2022
On 10th Sep 2022, the EU-funded “Advancing Health and Environmental Sustainability Through Action on Pollution” project team at UNDP Mongolia office had joined the “SDG Open Day”, a large-scale event organized by the United Nations in Mongolia with the goal to raise general public`s awareness about Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
During the event, in cooperation with stakeholders, including the School of Applied Sciences and Engineering of National University of Mongolia, National Committee for Reducing Environmental Pollution, and G-Power LLC, the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) campaigned to increase public`s understanding of SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy, and its importance on reducing environmental pollution and bringing positive impact on the health of the population.
The event team had presented interesting facts and novel renewable energy technologies and solutions to the public and provided them with information and suggestions on transitioning to cleaner energy.
Moreover, interactive scientific experiments on subjects such as "Where does energy come from? What is energy? How to save energy?” were demonstrated at the booth in cooperation with the UNICEF team in Mongolia which attracted hundreds of youths and children and helped them to gain understanding on energy and its importance in our daily lives.
Implementation of SDG 7, introduction and scaling-up of affordable and clean energy plays a particularly important role in reducing environmental pollution. Although the implementation of SDG 7 calls for a comprehensive program and action from the governments, it is also important to note that increased public awareness is equally vital in reaching the target goals of SDG7, including providing everyone with affordable, reliable, and modern energy services by 2030.
In 2017, 11.9% of the total energy generation in Mongolia was generated by renewable sources, and this had increased to 17.5% in 2021, according to the Statistics on Energy Performance in 2022 by Energy Regulatory Committee.
