Ravaging bush fires, intense heatwaves, catastrophic flooding, tremulous earthquakes, submersion and displacement of coastal communities, loss of our unique flora and fauna, disruption of lives and livelihoods. Sounds scary, right? This is what reality has in store for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) if the necessary actions are not taken now. 

Imagine instead, a Trinidad and Tobago with charging stations for electric cars, solar panels on the roof of your house, and natural home ventilation systems, all blending harmoniously with the environment. Picture yourself relaxing in urban green spaces, and abundant crop yields facilitated by smart technology. Time to bid farewell to the old and embrace the new? 

Mitigating Climate Change 

As a Small Island Developing State, T&T is not a major emitter of greenhouse gases compared to larger more developed countries. However, like our Caribbean neighbours, we face some of the most devastating impacts of climate change. Previous generations have set us on a path of environmental destruction, and now it is our responsibility to heal the planet. Addressing climate change is crucial for limiting global temperature rise, protecting ecosystems, safeguarding human well-being, enhancing social equity, and promoting long-term sustainability. The time for action is now!  

A New Sunrise, A New Day 

In the lush landscapes of Trinidad and Tobago, the sun shines brightly, offering not only warmth but an untapped potential for renewable energy. At the most opportune time when there is growing interest and traction around green energy, came the Global Climate Change Alliance Plus (GCCA+) Initiative. But what is GCCA+? In a nutshell, it’s a visionary initiative, under the donorship of the European Union and the Ministry of Planning and Development, with implementation by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This project aims to reduce our carbon footprint, promote renewable energy, and encourage energy efficiency. Through solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, policy support, and a public awareness campaign, the GCCA+ Initiative is paving the way for a sustainable energy future in Trinidad and Tobago. It's not just about installing solar panels; it's about transforming lives, protecting the environment, and strengthening the economy - a blueprint for holistic development. 

The Benefits of Switching to Renewable Energy in T&T 

The GCCA+ Project is stepping up to help us hit some impressive targets: by 2030, we’re aiming for 30% of our electricity to come from renewable sources and to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 15% across industries, power generation, and transport. This switch isn’t just eco-friendly; it’s also smart for our economy. By reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, we can save our natural gas for the petrochemical industry, boosting revenue and foreign exchange earnings. Plus adding renewable energy to the energy mix can spark technological innovations leading to new job opportunities.

Impact Created Thus Far 

Solar PV Installations 

On a mission to brighten the twin isle with sunlight, the project has been busy installing solar PV systems all over T&T, bringing clean, reliable energy to places that need it most. Here are some of the spots now shining a little brighter thanks to solar power: 

With 108kW of solar power installed, we’ve already slashed carbon emissions by 13.6 tonnes CO2 equivalent. These communities now enjoy a steady power supply without relying on diesel generators, promoting energy independence and sustainability. Plus, we’ve trained 92 people at these sites to operate and maintain the systems, empowering them with new skills. These solar installations are more than just tech upgrades; they’re beacons of hope and progress, showing over 10,000 people the benefits of renewable energy. 

Collaboration for IMPACT! 

We’ve also been working with the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries. We drafted a renewable energy policy and a feed-in tariff implementation plan. This plan will let people generate their own electricity from renewable sources and feed it back to the national grid for a monetary credit. Plus, folks from various agencies received specialized training in RE financial modelling and power purchase agreements.
