The Government of Japan, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Africa Bureau, has been actively contributing to humanitarian, developmental, and peace initiatives in Africa in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The ongoing Japanese government-funded projects (2022-2023) address the prolonged impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in medical emergencies, socio-economic recovery, and stabilization. Key goals include enhancing human security, supporting international counter-terrorism efforts, aiding UN Peacekeeping Operations (PKO) training centers, facilitating refugee resettlement, disaster recovery, and promoting transparent electoral systems.

Under the "Climate Promise" initiative, the Africa Bureau is implementing projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote responsible corporate conduct in global supply chains.

These initiatives are rooted in collaborative policy-level engagement through the African Development Conference (TICAD), co-hosted by Japan and UNDP since 1993. This collaboration has facilitated high-level meetings, action plan monitoring, public outreach, and the establishment of partnerships between Japan and Africa.

From TICAD7 in 2019 to TICAD8 in August 2022, the Africa Bureau oversaw the implementation of 90 Japan-supported projects, aligning with principles of human security and the New Approach for Peace and Stability in Africa (NAPSA), introduced during TICAD7.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japanese civil society organizations (CSOs), and private enterprises are crucial partners in executing these projects.
