LocationsUNDP analyzes the development potential of creative industries in the regions of Kazakhstan

Today, «Alikhan Bokeikhan University» in Semey hosted the second meeting in the framework of regional expert sessions on developing creative industries in Kazakhstan, supported by UNDP. The expert session brought together more than 50 representatives of various creative industry segments, including entrepreneurs, governmental and quasi-governmental organizations that support creative sector development, students, and local youth.
The sessions aim to conduct an analysis of regional creative ecosystems, identify factors influencing their development, determine the needs and visions of creative representatives from various groups on the further development of the creative sector in regions, analyze the level of awareness among interested sides about current national and regional initiatives in the development of creative industries, and formulate proposals for adapting existing and developing new industry-specific programs.
Cultural and creative industries have a significant impact on the global economy. They account for 3.1 percent of the world's GDP and provide workplaces to 6.2 percent of the workforce. In 2020, the allocation of this sector in Kazakhstan's GDP was 2.67 percent. Currently, in Kazakhstan, 95,000 people are working in this sector, and the total investment in the fixed capital is about 33.3 billion tenge. The development of this field, including the establishment of creative centers and support for creative entrepreneurs, has the potential to spur economic development in Kazakhstan and fully unleash the nation's intellectual and creative capabilities.
"Creative industries play an important role in forming cultural identity and sustainable economic development. They stimulate overall economic growth and promote entrepreneurship and new jobs, which is important for sustainable development. Cultural and creative initiatives also enrich our everyday experiences and contribute to forming intellectual and emotional capital, strengthening social connections,"noted Sukhrob Khojimatov, Deputy Resident Representative of the UNDP in Kazakhstan, in his opening speech.
The expert sessions are part of the UNDP Accelerator Lab’s extensive efforts to support the development of a knowledge-based economy. The first regional expert meeting took place in Kyzylorda on 13 November. The following meetings will be held in Almaty (November 24) and Astana (December 5). As part of the expert sessions, workshops on utilizing digital solutions in creative professions to enhance commercialization, positioning in digital media, and branding are planned for participants.
