In the face of formidable geopolitical tensions and a complex policy landscape that defined 2023, Kenya showcased extraordinary resilience, steering through uncertainties with the indispensable assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

As we present this annual report capturing the accomplishments of UNDP Kenya in 2023, we take pride in the collaborative efforts that led to remarkable achievements and impactful outcomes. Despite grappling with a noteworthy inflation rate of 6.8% in November 2023, the synergy between UNDP and the National Treasury culminated in the finalization of the Medium-Term Plan IV (2023-2027). This strategic blueprint serves as a cornerstone for Kenya’s structural transformation, setting the stage for an enhanced national trajectory.

The initiation of the Disaster Risk Management and Climate Action initiative, backed by a substantial budget of KES 27.6 billion, left an indelible mark by positively impacting nearly 12.5 million Kenyans across 16 counties. This initiative underscores UNDP’s unwavering commitment to addressing critical challenges on a large scale, particularly in the face of environmental and climate-related threats.

Our groundbreaking research report, titled ‘Addressing Inequality: Universal Access to Digital Financial Services (DFS) for Equitable Growth,’ has not only shed light on societal disparities but has also provided key policy recommendations. By focusing on fostering equity in DFS provision, this report aligns with UNDP’s commitment to creating a more inclusive financial landscape.

In Tana River County, UNDP’s venture in mapping water sources and rehabilitating boreholes has directly benefited 1,920 households, exemplifying our dedication to local development enablers and fiscal advancement. Furthermore, the joint project on Consolidating Gains and Deepening Devolution resulted in a remarkable KSh 437 million increase in revenue collection, empowering county governments and reducing the gap in Own Source Revenue (OSR) by 40% since 2019.
